This text explores the philosophical distinction between the terms "tělo" (body) and "těleso" (physical object or geometric body), a nuance clearly defined in the Czech language but often overlooked in other European traditions. The author critiques the Western philosophical legacy, particularly the Cartesian tradition, for conflating these two meanings within the Latin term "corpus" or the French "le corps." René Descartes conceptualized living beings as mere machines—inanimate spatial objects (res extensa) entirely decoupled from the thinking substance (res cogitans). In contrast, the Czech language reserves "těleso" for inanimate objects, while "tělo" signifies a living entity. The analysis further elaborates on the ontological difference between what a living being "is" (a physical object in space) and what it "has" (a living body). By highlighting this linguistic distinction, the text suggests that Czech provides a more precise framework for understanding embodiment and overcoming the reductionist view of living organisms as mere mechanisms.

[Tělo a těleso]
