The text reflects on the ontological categories of 'being' and 'existence,' challenging the common identification of 'being' with current physical reality. The author highlights the paradoxical nature of various forms of existence. On one hand, there are geometric objects like squares or triangles, which do not exist in the material world yet can be defined and studied with incomparable precision. On the other hand, there are historical entities and events, such as the extinct dodo bird or past occurrences, which were once real but no longer exist in the present. The essay raises the question of whether 'being' can encompass things that are merely thought or those that have already passed. It notes that historians, for instance, deal exclusively with what is no longer present, yet still forms a subject of inquiry. Ultimately, the text encourages a deeper examination of how we define the boundaries of reality and what status we assign to entities that fall outside direct sensory experience in the present moment.
