This text offers a critical reflection on a statement by the philosopher Odo Marquard, who asserted that what others say is more important than what he says himself. The author finds this claim problematic if interpreted as a fundamental philosophical stance rather than a mere gesture of politeness or moral decency. The core argument highlights that even when we are deeply engaged in understanding another person's thoughts and motivations, it is still the individual I who performs the act of thinking, interpreting, and evaluating. Understanding the other is always mediated by the self, which must weigh the circumstances and determine the significance of the other's perspective. Ultimately, maintaining a critical distance may lead the subject to conclude that their own judgment of the other's thought is more vital than the other's original message. The text emphasizes the indispensable role of the self in the process of intersubjective understanding and questions the unconditional prioritization of the other's voice.

Porozumění druhému
„Was die anderen sagen, ist für mich wichtiger als das, was ich sage. Darum habe ich jetzt ausgesprochene Unlust beim Worthalten. …“
(Odo Marquard, ex: Transzendental-philosophische Normenbegründungen. Ed. Willi Oelmüller. Paderborn 1978, S. 217.)
