This text critically examines the relationship between determinism and contingency in the structure of the universe. The author argues that the world cannot be viewed as a single, all-encompassing causal chain, nor as pure chaos. Instead, there are gaps or intervals between individual causal chains that allow for the emergence of events that, while not chaotic, are not strictly dictated by a single preceding cause. Through the practical example of a gas explosion, the text illustrates the distinction between a solitary cause and a complex set of conditions. It demonstrates that no single stimulus is sufficient to produce an effect; rather, multiple conditions must coincide. A central problem addressed is the origin of the consequence's integrity and unity, as the effect always contains both more and less than its causes. Ultimately, the author suggests that causal relationships must be understood alongside the role of chance, particularly in how various conditions combine, which challenges a strictly deterministic interpretation of reality.
