This text offers a critical examination of philosophical atomism and its historical implications. Although the concept of reality being divisible into smaller components significantly influenced modern chemistry and physics, the author highlights a fundamental theoretical flaw present since the movement's ancient Greek origins. The primary issue is the atomists' failure to distinguish between mere heaps and genuine wholes. This oversight results in an inability to differentiate between accidental emergence and organic birth (physis), leading to a misattribution of natural processes to inanimate entities such as rocks or rivers. Another crucial consequence is the denial of the primordial living nature of the first principle (arché). While earlier Milesian thinkers viewed arché as a living or life-giving principle, atomism—influenced by the Eleatics—relegated life to a derivative and secondary status. The text emphasizes that the mechanistic worldview of atomism fundamentally altered our understanding of life and the ontological structure of reality by sacrificing the unity and internal dynamics of the whole in favor of a mere aggregation of particles.
