This text explores the nature of consciousness as a collection of diverse performances and acts rather than an inherent unity. The author argues that consciousness lacks internal integrity and must be constantly and actively unified by the subject, who exists "outside" or "above" these individual acts. A single act of consciousness is incapable of establishing its own unity or the integrity of the whole; it is entirely dependent on the subject as its guarantor. The subject plays a crucial role not only in unifying isolated acts but also in ensuring their mutual compatibility and systematic integration within a broader framework. The text warns against a reductive understanding of consciousness as a mere plurality of thinking acts. By highlighting the dynamic and non-autonomous nature of consciousness, the text directs attention to the subject as the essential unifying principle, without which consciousness would remain a fragmented cluster of partial operations lacking deeper meaning and continuity.
