This text explores the complexity of interpretation and the process of understanding another's thoughts. The author argues that true understanding does not stem from empathetic identification with the writer, but from establishing a personal intellectual relationship with the "thought" itself—the object to which the author's thought refers. To ensure a genuine grasp of this "thought," the interpreter must be able to express it differently from the original author, necessitating a degree of distance from their specific mode of expression. This task is particularly challenging when dealing with ancient authors who lack modern conceptual frameworks or those whose concepts are incomplete. In such instances, the objective shifts from faithful reproduction to recognizing the value of specific ideas and integrating them into one's own conceptual system. Ultimately, the focus moves away from the author toward the utility of the ideas themselves, emphasizing the transformation of the "thought" into a functional element of the interpreter's own thinking process and conceptual structure.

Pak jde o to, co se s tím dá podnikat, nikoli o věrnost reprodukování autentické myšlenky onoho autora (o něhož pak nejde).
