This reflection examines the concepts of uniqueness and novelty within ancient Greek thought, focusing on Socrates and Plato. For these thinkers, anything truly substantial was perceived as eternally present; events occurring "hic et nunc" were seen merely as external manifestations of timeless principles. Consequently, individuality and uniqueness were relegated to a secondary status or dismissed as mere appearances. The author notes that while inconsistencies exist—such as the active Demiurge or the "shapeless flow" mentioned in Plato's Timaeus—true reality since the Eleatic school has been consistently attributed to the immutable. This philosophical fixation on the unchanging betrays a clear inspiration from geometry and mathematics. The abstract concludes that Greek ontology prioritizes fixed being over the transient and the new, viewing the latter as a lower form of reality. By analyzing these foundational views, the text clarifies why the concept of genuine historical novelty was largely foreign to classical Greek philosophical systems.
