Historically, stars were considered the most stable points in the universe, yet ancient observers soon identified planets that moved across the sky with exceptional regularity. The systematic study of these movements, particularly conjunctions, led to the birth of astrology as a discipline based on the interpretation of celestial phenomena. However, the central point of the text is a critique of the astrological approach, which the author deems fundamentally flawed. According to the text, this error lies in the inadmissible confusion of the subjective appearance of the night sky and the relative positions of celestial bodies with objective reality. Ve světě kolem nás pozorujeme, že některé „skutečnosti“ se mění, zatímco jiné se zdají trvat. Postupně však lidé zjišťovali, že i to, co se zdá trvat, se po delší době přece jenom také mění; a kromě toho také zjišťovali, že některé změny jsou tak rychlé, že je takřka nevnímáme nebo že je dokonce vůbec vnímat ani nemůžeme. Za nejtrvalejší čili nejméně proměnlivé se lidem zprvu zdály hvězdy resp. jejich vzájemná postavení, ale už velmi dávno se staří pozorovatelé hvězd naučili mezi nimi rozpoznávat některé, které své postavení proti ostatním nápadně měnily, ale s pozoruhodnou pravidelností. A tak svou pozornost věnovali přednostně právě těmto zvláštním hvězdám, o nichž dnes víme, že to jsou planety naší sluneční soustavy. Na pozorování a výkladu toho, v jakém právě místě mezi jinými, zdánlivě jen neměnně kolem země kroužícími hvězdami se ta či ona planeta zdánlivě setkávala s jinou planetou (nebo jinými planetami – tzv. konjunkce), pak staří „hvězdáři“ už před řadou tisíciletí založili a postupně se stále větší důkladností pěstovali zvláštní disciplínu, zvanou astrologie.
