This text examines the structure and nature of the seven liberal arts (septem artes liberales) within the context of medieval universities. The author distinguishes between the trivium, consisting of grammar, logic, and rhetoric, and the quadrivium, which included arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy. A central point of the analysis is the conceptualization of these disciplines as skills (ars, techné) rather than sciences in the modern or even Aristotelian sense. The text emphasizes that the transformation of these skills into independent scientific disciplines was a complex process that cannot be simplified as a mere emergence from philosophy. Although the seven liberal arts were not considered philosophy itself, nor a formal introduction to it, there was an undeniable overlap. Philosophical elements often permeated the trivium through the use of illustrative examples. The article thus provides insight into the epistemological status of medieval education and its evolving relationship with philosophical thought.

Artes liberales
