This text reflects on the relationship between atoms and life, prompted by a question posed by the physicist James Jeans in 1930. Jeans asked whether a living cell is merely a group of ordinary atoms arranged in a non-ordinary way, or if it is something more – atoms plus life. The author critiques this formulation for its biased assumption that atoms are inherently "mere" or inanimate, with life acting as an external intervention. A central point of the critique is the misunderstanding of what "non-ordinary arrangement" implies in biological systems. The author argues that such order possesses no inherent inertia; it is not a static occurrence but a state that must be actively maintained, continuously renewed, and strenuously repaired when disrupted. Consequently, life is not an ingredient added to passive matter, but an ongoing activity of preserving order within certain limits. By challenging the reductionist view of "mere atoms," the text highlights that active maintenance is the defining characteristic of living systems.

Atomy a život
Mezi válkami (přesně 1930) si položil James Jeans tuto otázku: „is a living cell merely a group of ordinary atoms arranged in some non-ordinary way, or is it something more?
