This philosophical reflection examines the nuanced relationship between connections and the constitution of a true whole. It posits that the mere existence of connections does not automatically guarantee the formation of a whole. A fundamental distinction must be made between constitutive connections, which are essential to the whole’s integrity, and merely external, measurable relations that lack foundational significance for wholeness. Moreover, the text identifies a dual nature of structural relationships: while some ensure internal unity, others act as real discontinuities or separations. These non-connections are crucial because they differentiate the whole from its environment and the rest of the world, thereby securing its autonomy (svébytnost) rather than a static identity. Ultimately, the author argues that a whole is defined both by the connections that join it and by the boundaries and distances that set it apart. Without these limiting relations and distinct margins, a true whole cannot exist, as it would lack the necessary separation from its surroundings to maintain its own unique and independent being.

Celek a souvislosti / Souvislosti a celkovost
