This text examines the relationship between humanity and the concept of infinity or the vastness of the universe. It traces this existential feeling from early Christian traditions, where man was viewed as infinitely small compared to God, to Blaise Pascal's harsh reflection on the precarious human position between the infinitely small and the infinitely great. Historically, the idea of an infinite universe was rejected for theological reasons and later embraced by atheists. However, modern astrophysics, primarily through the Big Bang theory, has established scientific boundaries for our universe's beginning and potential end. Despite this, the notion of real infinity persists in scientific imagination, such as through theories of multiple universes. The author argues that from a human perspective, the distinction between a truly infinite universe and one that is merely unimaginably large has lost its significance, as both evoke a sense of oppression and existential anxiety. The essay concludes by asking how one can face this overwhelming feeling of cosmic insignificance.

Člověk a „nekonečno“
