This text explores the process of a subject's self-awareness, which begins with the realization of one's own finitude and the contingency of being. The author argues that true self-consciousness arises when an individual realizes that their existence is not a given certainty, but rather something they did not choose or create. This pivotal moment leads to existential questions regarding what to do with the life one has been granted. According to the text, if a person fails to ask such questions, they have not yet fully realized who or what they are. However, once this awareness is achieved, it enables further inquiry that goes beyond personal existence, reaching toward the very nature of thinking and the essence of questioning itself. Such an individual is capable of not only reflecting on the world but also thinking and living through reflection. The text highlights that fundamental questioning is a defining characteristic of a developed consciousness that transcends mere biological presence toward a deeper philosophical grounding of human existence.
