This text analyzes Saint Augustine's famous reflection on the nature of time and the associated aporia expressed in his inquiry 'quid est enim tempus.' The author argues that the core of this philosophical problem does not lie in our everyday lived experience of time—which we navigate and understand naturally—but rather in the mistaken methodological assumption that time can be defined as a static, objective entity, much like a geometric shape or a mathematical constant. Such an attempt at a formal definition inevitably leads to a logical paradox: the past is gone, the future is not yet here, and the present moment lacks duration as it instantly vanishes into the past. Consequently, the Augustinian aporia highlights the inherent limitations of conceptual definitions that attempt to 'reify' time. Ultimately, the text concludes that the primary intellectual difficulty arises not from the nature of time itself, but from a flawed mode of inquiry that treats time as a definable object rather than a dynamic phenomenon.

Augustin a pojetí času
Naše myšlenková nesnáz tudíž nemá svůj zdroj a původ v povaze samého času, nýbrž v povaze (totiž chybnosti) našeho tázání, tedy myšlenkového přístupu.
