This note provides a critical reflection on Ota Funda’s article about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, published in the Journal of Philosophy (Filosofický časopis) in 2006. While acknowledging the quality of Funda’s contribution within the context of a retrospective on the 20th century, the author highlights two specific shortcomings found upon initial reading. First, the author points out the insufficient attention given to Bonhoeffer’s academic career, specifically the omission of his 1932 Berlin habilitation title despite the mention of his earlier dissertation. Second, the critique focuses on the portrayal of the relationship between Bonhoeffer and Karl Barth. Funda is criticized for ignoring Bonhoeffer’s pivotal critique of Barth’s "revelation positivism" (Offenbarungspositivismus). Furthermore, the author notes the absence of the significant exchange between the two theologians regarding Bonhoeffer’s decision to return to Germany during the war. These omissions are presented as flaws that overlook crucial nuances in Bonhoeffer’s theological development and his moral stance against the Nazi regime.
