This text explores the philosophical concept of essence (essentia, bytnost) and its historical development from Greek ousia and Aristotelian thought to Latin Scholasticism. It distinguishes between essence, which defines the specific properties of a thing (what it is), and existence, which denotes the mere fact of its occurrence in the world. Traditional Scholasticism viewed the relationship between essence and existence as one of potentiality (potentia) and actuality (actus). However, the author critiques this essentialist framework, particularly its unjustified assumption that essence is a permanent and unchanging whole throughout a thing's duration. The document argues that the being of any true reality is actually a dynamic process of realization and an event-like happening during which properties change. Consequently, essence cannot be defined as something unambiguous and independent of time. The text thus suggests moving away from a static understanding of essence toward a conception that accounts for the processual and temporal nature of being.

Esence a esencialismus
